FAQs

  • Is it sterile when it arrives?

Coconut compost is sterile and free of weed seeds when it arrives.

  • Is it organic?

The majority of our coconut compost is naturally organic, however some of our products have been washed and buffered. Our factory has the first wastewater treatment facility ensuring they are not damaging the environment. Our products will clearly state whether they are organic or washed and buffered.

  • What is washed and buffered and is it better?

Washed and buffered coir is better for crops that are particularly salt sensitive. When the coir is buffered, it reduces the EC levels even further, however this process makes the coir nonorganic. Washed coir works well with most plants however buffered coir offers "insurance" to your plants.

  • Is it a responsible replacement for peat products?

Coconut compost is a responsible replacement for peat; commercial growers have already been switching to it due to its physical structure allowing white root development to occur and preventing root death, essentially meaning healthier roots therefore a healthier and stronger plant. In terms of environmental concerns, coconut compost is also superior on this matter. Despite it coming from Sri Lanka, its carbon footprint is small as they are compacted, lightweight and shipped by sea freight. Peat is a hero its own way when it is left untouched by us. Peat bogs are a carbon sink therefore removing carbon from the atmosphere; when we dig up the peat bogs they start to emit carbon back into the atmosphere and contribute to global warming.

  • Can I use this for pets?

Coconut compost can indeed be used for your pets! It provides an excellent terrarium base layer for your reptiles and tortoises.

  • How can you reuse coir

You can also reuse by removing the roots from the coconut compost and plant pot to start with. You can then apply bactericide or fungicide to the coconut compost which will reduce the risk of disease to your new plants. Once you have finished buffering the coconut compost it will be ready to host your new plants. Due to coconut compost’s structure, it can be reused unlike peat.

  • How much compost does each block make?

Our letterbox compost will make approximately 6 litres.

Our big block will provide you with approximately 60l of coconut compost.

  • Where can I plant with Coconut compost?

Coconut compost is suitable for both indoor and outdoor planting it can either be mixed into to your soil to break it up to make it more accommodating for your plants roots.

  • Are there different types of Coconut compost depending on what I want to grow?

Coconut compost can be treated and cut in different ways to further benefit your plants. Ours is suitable for most plants, however commercial growers will ask for specific cuts and treatment to further increase their yields for their crops.

  • Do I use hot or cold water to hydrate?

You can use either hot or cold water, but using hot water speeds up the coconut compost expanding.

  • Which plant food should I use?

This will mostly depend on your plants needs, coconut compost has a neutral pH and an equal amount of nutrients making it easier for you to choose what plant food you want.

  • Do I need to feed every time I water, and how often?

The instructions on the plant food should provide you when and what amount to feed your plants.

  • How do I reuse?

Removing the roots from the coconut compost and plant pot to start with. You can then apply bactericide or fungicide to the coconut compost this will reduce the risk of disease to your new plants.
